01 / Do I need a referral to start physical therapy?
No. Texas gives you direct access to physical therapy, which means a licensed physical therapist can evaluate and treat you without a doctor's referral for up to 10 consecutive business days. Most people start that way. Some insurance plans still ask for a referral before they will pay, so Andrea Wall, our Patient Care Coordinator, checks that when she verifies your benefits and tells you before you come in.
02 / Do you take my insurance?
We are in-network with Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana, Medicare Part B, Tricare, and United Healthcare. Plans differ from person to person even inside the same carrier, so Andrea Wall verifies your specific benefits before your first visit. You will know what your plan covers before you walk in, not after.
03 / How soon can I get an appointment?
No long waits here. We get you in within 48 business hours or less. Call (210) 616-0629 or send the request form on this page and we will call you back to confirm a time and check your benefits before you arrive.
04 / What happens at my first visit?
You get a one-on-one evaluation with your therapist. Before anything else, we watch how you actually move: how you walk, reach, load and shift. The spot that hurts is often not the spot causing it. You tell us the whole history, not just the highlights, and you leave with a plan that says what we found and what we are going to do about it.
05 / Do I have to do Pilates?
No, and you do not need to be fit or flexible to start. Pilates here is not a fitness class. It is a set of movement principles your therapist adapts to your body, your findings and your goals. Reformer and tower work is scaled to what you can do that day, and plenty of patients begin with very small ranges of motion.
06 / How is Pilates-based physical therapy different from a Pilates class?
A class teaches one routine to a room. Pilates-based physical therapy is prescribed to you by your licensed physical therapist based on what your evaluation found, and it changes as you change. We use it to rebuild the strength and control that hold your progress in place after the pain settles down.
07 / Who will I be working with?
Dr. Cynthia Mendez, PT, DPT, OCS owns the clinic and treats patients in it. She is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, a board-certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist since 2011, and a certified Pilates instructor since 2008. The rest of the clinical team are licensed physical therapist assistants, including Bethany Roberts, PTA, NCPT and Sara Mejia, PTA. Care runs at a 1:1 patient to therapist ratio, so it is your therapist with you for the session.
08 / What should I bring to my first visit?
A photo ID, your insurance card, and your referral or prescription if a physician gave you one. Add anything that fills in the history: imaging reports, surgical notes, a list of your current medications, and any home exercise program you were given somewhere else. Clothing you can move in matters more than most people expect.
09 / What should I wear?
Something loose that you can move and be examined in. Shorts or loose pants for a hip, knee, ankle or back problem. A t-shirt or tank top for a shoulder, neck or arm problem. Bring supportive shoes if walking, balance or getting back to a sport is part of why you are coming in.
10 / What kinds of problems do you treat?
Orthopedic problems, mostly. There are 17 conditions on our list: back pain and sciatica, neck pain, shoulder pain, rotator cuff tears, hip and knee pain, arthritis, joint pain, chronic pain, balance and gait disorders, dizziness and vertigo, plantar fasciitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, foot or ankle pain, elbow, wrist and hand pain, sports injuries, and rehabilitation after hip replacement surgery or knee replacement surgery.
11 / Where are you, and when are you open?
We are at 4939 De Zavala Rd, Suite 103, San Antonio, TX 78249. We are open Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm, and closed Saturday and Sunday. Phone is (210) 616-0629, fax is (210) 616-0916, and email is pyramidptandpilates@gmail.com.
12 / What if I need to cancel or reschedule?
Call (210) 616-0629 as early as you can and Andrea Wall will move you. Scheduling runs through her, so one call handles it. If you reach us outside clinic hours, leave a message or email pyramidptandpilates@gmail.com and we will get back to you the next business day.
