Arthritis Treatment in San Antonio

Arthritis is disease within the joint itself. Cartilage thins, the joint lining becomes irritated, and the joint tolerates less load. Physical therapy restores motion and builds the strength that protects the joint.

Arthritis is a disease inside the joint.

In osteoarthritis, the common form, the cartilage capping the ends of your bones thins and roughens, the lining of the joint becomes irritated, and the bone underneath slowly changes shape. Inflammatory arthritis works differently. In rheumatoid arthritis the immune system attacks the joint lining itself, which is why it often shows up in matching joints on both sides of the body and comes with prolonged morning stiffness.

Either way, the joint now tolerates less than it used to, and that is the part physical therapy can change. Arthritis sets what a joint will accept on a given day. It does not get to decide how much you move. Strength above and below the joint, the motion you still have kept available, and load shared better across the whole limb all reduce what that joint has to absorb. At Pyramid Physical Therapy & Pilates in San Antonio, that is the work.

How an arthritic joint usually behaves.

Arthritis symptoms follow patterns tied to rest, load and time of day, and those patterns tell us which joints to test first. One caution: if a joint turns hot, red and swollen quickly, or your joint pain arrives with a fever or a general feeling of being unwell, contact your physician rather than booking therapy. That combination needs medical review first.

Stiffness After Rest

Joints that feel locked when you first stand up in the morning or after sitting a while, then loosen once you start moving.

Aching That Builds With Use

A deep ache inside the joint that grows through the day, especially after standing, walking or repeated stairs.

Swelling and Warmth

Puffiness around the joint that can feel warm to the touch and is usually worse after a long day on your feet.

Grinding or Catching

A gritty, grating sensation as the joint moves, sometimes with a catch that makes you pause mid-step.

Range You Have Lost

A knee that will not fully straighten, a hip that limits how far you can turn, a shoulder that stops short overhead.

Flare Days

Stretches where the joint is noticeably angrier for no obvious reason, then settles again. Flares are expected, and they are plannable.

Load an arthritic joint well and it complains less.

Care at Pyramid Physical Therapy & Pilates starts with the arthritic joint and everything feeding it: the muscles that control it, the joints above and below, and how you actually load it when you walk, rise from a chair and climb stairs. Two people with the same imaging can move completely differently, and how you move is the part we can influence.

Hands-on manual therapy is used to ease stiffness and open up the motion the joint still has. Pilates-based strengthening then rebuilds control with the resistance graded finely, which is where the reformer and tower earn their place: you can work muscle hard without pounding the joint. Your licensed physical therapist raises the dose as tolerance improves, and you leave knowing how to ride out a flare without losing the ground you gained.

No referral needed to start in Texas. We are in-network with six major insurers, and we can usually get you in within 48 business hours or less.

Built around what your joints will take.

Calm the Irritated Joint

We ease the load that is currently provoking the joint and use hands-on work to reduce stiffness and muscle guarding, so moving stops feeling like a gamble.

Rebuild the Muscle Around It

Strong muscle is the best shock absorber a joint has. Pilates-based work and graded exercise build it at a resistance the joint accepts today, then we raise it.

Keep It Yours

You go home with a program you can run independently and a plan for flare days, so an arthritic joint does not quietly shrink what your week contains.

In a patient's own words.

"These people are simply the best! I have been under their care for the past 2 months for a chronic issue (scoliosis). I have learned more in those sessions than I have in all my PT sessions combined."
