Steady is a skill, and it can be trained.
Balance therapy is physical therapy for people who have started thinking about their footing. Maybe there was a near-miss on a curb. Maybe you have quietly stopped walking the dog after dark. Balance is not a fixed trait you either have or lose. It is a system, and every part of it responds to training.
Three things keep you upright: what your eyes see, what your inner ear senses, and what your feet and joints feel. Your licensed physical therapist tests each one, finds which is letting you down, and trains that one hardest. We have open floor space for gait and balance work, so this happens on your feet rather than on a table.
Test the system, then train the weak part.
Find Out What Is Failing
We test standing, walking, turning and reaching, with your eyes open and closed, on firm ground and on soft. That separates a vision problem from an inner ear problem from simple leg weakness.
Train the Deficit
The system you have been relying on least is the one we work hardest. That feels uncomfortable at first and it is supposed to, and your therapist stays within arm's reach the whole time.
Take It Outside the Clinic
Curbs, thresholds, carrying something in both hands, turning your head while you walk. Real life is where balance actually fails, so we rehearse real life.
