The work before the operation counts as much as the work after.
Prehab is the half almost everybody skips. In the weeks before an operation you can bank strength and range that you will spend afterwards, learn the post-op exercises while you can still concentrate on learning them, and practise the crutches, the walker or the sling before using them becomes compulsory. People who do this start recovery ahead instead of behind.
Afterwards the job changes: protect the repair while the rest of you keeps working. Your therapist follows the healing timeline for the tissue that was operated on and your surgeon’s protocol, treats scar and swelling early rather than late, and keeps everything else loaded so that one healing shoulder does not cost you a whole year of conditioning.
One plan that spans the operation.
Before: Bank What You Can
We build strength and range in whatever weeks you have, teach you the exercises you will be doing straight after the operation, and rehearse the practical parts: getting in and out of bed, up from a chair, and around the house with the aid you will be using.
After: Protect and Progress
Early sessions respect the repair absolutely. Inside those limits we manage swelling, begin scar work, restore the motion you are permitted, and keep the rest of you moving so that deconditioning does not turn into a second problem.
Then: Back to Your Life
Strength first, then load, then the real thing, whether that is lifting a grandchild, a full shift on your feet, or getting back onto the reformer in the studio.
Through three surgeries.
“Pyramid Physical Therapy has been so beneficial to me! Hate to say, but in the last 2 yrs, I have had 3 surgeries. The therapists there have seen me through rehab for all!”Bobbi B. · Post-Surgical Rehab
Surgery on the calendar?
Come in before it, not only after. Even a short block of prehab changes what the first week on the other side feels like.
